Abra group calls for end to terror, violence

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

BANGUED, Abra, Philippines – A non-government organization is urging political leaders and parties in Abra to end the culture of violence and terror, and raise the level of elections toward issues on programs and projects that alleviate the plight of the poor.

The ABra movement for Change (ABC) said the electorate is tired of violence associated with the political season and is clamoring for change that will bring real development in the province.

The ABC cited the murder of a village leader and supporter of a mayoral candidate last week.

“The contending political parties must sign a covenant of peace in front of the people so they will be beholden and bounded by their promises,” the ABC said.

The group has commissioned an independent survey to determine voters’ awareness and preference.

The survey was conducted from April 8 to 9 in Bangued, Bucay, Danglas, Dolores, La Paz, Langangilang, Lagayan and Manabo, and from April 15 to 16 in Penarubia, Pidigan, Pilar, San Isidro, San Juan, San Quintin, Tayum and Villaviciosa.

It showed Vice President Jejomar Binay enjoying a lead of 42.6 percent voters’ preference in the presidential race.

Sen. Grace Poe obtained 27.5 percent; Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, 18.6; Mar Roxas, 8.1, and Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago 3.2 percent.

In the vice presidential race, Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. topped the survey with 86.4 voters’ preference. His rivals Sen. Francis Escudero got 5.4 percent; Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo, 3.1; Sen. Gringo Honasan, 2.6; Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, 2.3 and Sen. Antonio Trillanes, .2 percent.   – With Jose Rodel Clapano
