'Extension of deadline of talks with MILF possible'

-

DAVAO CITY -- Defense Secretary Orlando Mercado said yesterday an extension was still possible on the June deadline which President Estrada had set for the government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) panels to forge a peace agreement.

"An extension is possible, but it should only be for very compelling reasons such as substantial issues that need further discussions," Mercado said. "We will recommend the extension only if there is basis for one."

He pointed out that the need for an extension will be determined by how much work has been accomplished once the deadline comes.

"We will assess the situation by then and recommend an extension if needed," the defense chief said.

Mercado noted that despite difficulties arising from renewed hostilities between government troops and MILF guerrillas, the peace process continues to move along.

The two panels are set to hold the third round of formal talks on March 8 which will be preceded by a meeting of the technical committee tomorrow and Tuesday at the Estosan Hotel in Cotabato City.

Mercado, however, stressed that even if an extension remains an option, the two panels should strive to work within the time frame set by the President.

"I think we should work as much as possible within the deadline. Since the issues raised in the talks have already been addressed on the peace accord with the MILF, we believe the process can be hastened at this time," he said.

Some quarters earlier expressed doubt that the deadline would be met since discussions have so far been confined to agenda setting despite three years of exploratory talks.
