MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reminded the public yesterday that Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 were declared special non-working holidays only for those working in the executive branch of government.

Citing Memorandum Circular No. 37 of Malacañang, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said those in the private sector and in the legislative and judiciary departments are not covered by the holidays.

But Bello noted he does not prevent the others from following suit. 

“It’s up to them if they want to make a similar declaration,” he added.?Based on MC 37, work in government offices, including government-owned and controlled corporations, government financial institutions, state universities and colleges, local governments units and other agencies and instrumentalities has been suspended on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 to give Filipinos time to enjoy the holidays.

Under Proclamation No. 50, Dec. 25 or Christmas Day, and Rizal Day on Dec. 30 are regular holidays while New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31 (Sunday) is a special non-working day.?On the other hand, Proclamation No. 269 declared New Year’s Day, Jan. 1 as a regular holiday.
