MANILA, Philippines — Two government officials just lost their jobs after President Rodrigo Duterte sacked them for sitting on an infrastructure project that is expected to decongest the country’s capital.

“Itong dalawa, may pinagawa akong dismissal. Hindi ko nagustuhan kasi ang Cabinet members are only allowed one month to act on the papers. Ang mga directors, ulitin ko, 15 days lang kayo,” Duterte told state-run PTV on Friday night.

According to Duterte, the project’s roll out had been delayed for a year due to the two officials’ failure to act on the plan. He did not disclose the names of the two dismissed government employees.

“May dalawa dito na isang taon na halos ‘yung papel. At ‘yun pa namang papel na ‘yung construction firm, na siya ang gagawa ng bridge across San Juan,” he said.

“Ang sabi ko sa kanila, kasi madaliin nga. Ito, almost one day --- one year rather --- walang ginawa kung hindi mag-upo doon sa papeles,” he added.

Duterte earlier reminded government workers to provide efficient service and simplify processes as he vowed to be tough on those remiss in their duties.

He has stepped up measures to reduce red tape in the government and vowed not to allow anyone who refuses to do his job to go unpunished.

In the same television interview on Friday, Duterte said the two axed officials issued an apology to him but he refused to accept their excuses.

“Masama talaga ang ginawa nitong dalawa. It delayed the project,” the president said.

“So, for almost so many months, nagmamadali nga tayo so that we can have the mobility of the people of Metro Manila moving faster. Itong dalawa, inupuan ‘yan almost one year,” he added.

Last week, Duterte said two heads rolled at Malacañang for “using their influence” as he reiterated his promise to weed out corruption in the government.

Recently, Duterte said he asked former Information and Communications Technology Secretary Rodolfo Salalima to resign, saying he had received complaints that the former official was partial to one company.
