UST targets Guinness record for largest human formation

Over 16,000 students of the University of Santo Tomas attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest human sentence ‘My Teacher is My Hero’ to mark National Teachers’ Month at the UST open field in Manila yesterday. EDD GUMBAN

MANILA, Philippines — Setting aside the brewing controversy over the hazing death of one of its law students, some 16,729 Thomasians took part in the University of Santo Tomas (UST)’s attempt to achieve a Guinness World Record for the “largest human sentence” yesterday morning.

UST’s target was to beat the record of the Rotary District 3000 and Roever Group of Educational Institutions in India on Aug. 10, 2016 where 16,550 participants formed the sentence, “You can you will.”

The students on Friday formed the sentence “My teacher is my hero!” in line with the celebration of the National Teachers’ Month from Sept. 5 to Oct. 5.

UST – with a student population of 43,000 – had hoped that 18,000 to 20,000 of their students, teaching and non-teaching staff and officials would take part in the event to set a new Guinness record.

They invited auditors, accountants and public school teachers to serve as witnesses. They would then compile and submit the documents, photographs and other evidence to the Guinness World Records that would make the official tally and announce if the university was able to beat India’s record.

The original plan of the organizers was for the participants to stand still for five minutes from 9 a.m. to 9:05 a.m. to document the event, but they had difficulty gathering the students, so the documentation was moved to 9:29 a.m.

The students were supposed to wear black, in contrast to the green grass of the football field, but some students wearing other colored uniforms were later seen entering the field.
