MANILA, Philippines - Cockfighting, a favorite Filipino pastime, might be banned for two weeks in Pampanga as part of measures to contain avian flu.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said he suggested a temporary ban on cockfighting to Gov. Lilia Pineda, who agreed to convince mayors in the province to support the scheme.

“It involves the movement of fowl from one place to another,” Piñol said. “Governor Pineda agreed and she relayed it to the mayors and they all accepted the proposal,” he added.

Senior Supt. Joel Consulta, Pampanga police acting provincial director, said he has not received any order from the Department of Agriculture to suspend cockfighting in the province.

He stressed he would enforce the ban only after he gets official instructions from higher ups.
