Binay urges presidential rivals to bare bank accounts

Patricia Lourdes Viray - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Jejomar Binay on Monday urged his opponents in the presidential race to sign a general waiver to open and check their bank accounts after the second presidential debate in Cebu City.

The United Nationalist Alliance standard bearer showed the general waiver during a press conference in Cebu City on Monday morning.

The waiver authorizes the Anti-Money Laundering Council to look into all bank accounts under the name of the candidates, their spouses and their children to ensure full transparency in the election process.

Binay also called on all presidential aspirants to submit themselves to a lifestyle and government service performance check.

The vice president attempted to show the waiver during the debate on Sunday evening but was reminded that he was not allowed to bring notes and documents on stage.

The presidential debate at the University of the Philippines campus in Cebu City was delayed for more than an hour due to a communication between the Binay camp and TV5 Chief and debate moderator Luchi Cruz-Valdes.

The TV5 management and Valdes later on issued an apology for the delay in the Visayas leg of the presidential debate.
