Jinggoy wants to hold legislative hearings while detained

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - The lawyers of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada on Thursday asked the Sandiganbayan to allow their client to conduct legislative hearings while inside the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame, where is currently detained for graft and plunder charges.

At the continuation of the bail hearing, Estrada's legal counsels asked the anti-graft court's Fifth Division, chaired by Associate Justice Roland Jurado, that the detained senator be allowed to do his legislative work inside the police camp.

Estrada, who is facing plunder and 11 counts of graft for his alleged involvement in the P10 billion pork barrel scam, is currently chairman of the Senate Committee on Employment and Human Resources Development.

Estrada's lawyers cited the case of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV who was allowed to conduct committee hearings while detained for rebellion charges.

The tribunal has given Estrada's lawyers five days to submit their formal motion.

The Senate leadership has deferred the implementation of the 90-day suspension on Estrada as well as those of senators Ramon Revilla Jr.and Juan Ponce Enrile, pending the resolution of their appeals by the Sandiganbayan.

Like Estrada, the two senators also face plunder and graft charges in connection with the pork barrel scam.
