Filipinos bag 14 medals in India math competition

MANILA, Philippines - Young Filipino math wizards bagged a respectable haul of 14 medals, including two golds, at the Mathematics International Competition (WIZMIC) held in Lucknow, India earlier this week.

Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines, said that the Philippine delegation, composed of 16 students, was third behind Thailand and Indonesia in the most number of gold medals won, with two golds bagged by Aiman Andrei Kue of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Jose Lorenzo Abad  of Colegio de San Agustin-Makati.

India, which  fielded 128 students, won one gold, 12 silver, and 26 bronze medals.

Thailand, which fielded 16 students, won 13 golds and three silvers, while Indonesia, which also fielded 16 students like the Philippines bagged eight gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals.

The Philippines’ silver medal winners were Andrei Lenard Chan and Stephen James Ty of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Jhervey Edric Cheng of Chiang Kai Shek College; Kristin Angela Narag of Colegio de San Agustin-Binan, Laguna; Audrey Gabrielle Tan of St. Peter the Apostle School; Wesley Gavin Palomar of Falcon School; Jodi Marcia Arcadio of Notre Dame of Greater Manila; Hiraya Marcos of Philippine Cultural College-Manila; Gregory Charles Tiong of St. Jude Catholic School; and Cassey Jules Uygongco of Hua Siong College of Iloilo.

Jose Oliver Narvasa of Notre Dame of Greater Manila and Jannica Allison Lim of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School won the Philippines’ two bronze medals.

The 2014 WIZMIC, from Oct. 18 to to 21, drew 12 country participants: host country India, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
