Powering an energy resilient future

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Today, no single energy source can fulfil the growing energy demand worldwide. People rely on energy for cooking, heating and lighting. Businesses and farms need energy to improve productivity and generate growth. And with the globe’s increasing interconnectedness and population, energy solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support energy security are fast gaining significance.

As such, energy transition is at the forefront of achieving a low carbon future – one where economies can sustainably fuel progress without coming short of energy supply. This was emphasized by Jefferson Edwards, general manager for Global Gas and LNG market development for Shell, when he visited the country recently to share the latest trends in energy resource and consumption globally.

Energy transition is the shift from relying heavily on conventional resources of power such as oil and coal to a more diverse mix that includes renewable energy from wind, solar, and hydropower, and the fossil fuel alternative to coal which is cleaner-burning natural gas.

In the Philippines, Edwards said Shell is testing its businesses to prepare for a de-carbonized and more energy efficient world. Edwards observed the country historically has a good balance of energy resources. The country was actually ahead than most of the world in utilizing geothermal and hydrothermal energy.

The Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project in Palawan which Shell operates also supplies 3,200 megawatts generated from cleaner-burning natural gas and reduces dependence on oil imports.
