DepEd official, 10-yr-old grandson hurt by gunmen

CEBU, Philippines - A 63-year-old school district supervisor and her 10-year-old grandson were wounded when they were shot at by two men on a motorcycle at Pavia town in Iloilo, Tuesday morning.

The fatality, Pasencia Jovero, was driving her sedan with her grandson on their way to school when they were waylaid by the assailants along Brgy. Tigum, about one kilometer from their house in Brgy. Pagsanga-an.

Witnesses told the police that the backrider initially fired a warning shot. When Jovero did not stop, the motorcycle blocked the car’s path and another shot was fired, this time hitting the school official.

Jovero suffered a graze wound on her chest with the bullet exiting through the right portion of her stomach and pierced through her grandson’s left leg.

While the incident caught the attention of residents in the area, the two assailants fled going to Zarraga town, and the victims were rushed to the Iloilo Mission Hospital.

Police investigators looked at two angles of the incident. “It could be a case of mistaken identity,” said Sr. Insp. Dante Dumaguing, although robbery was also considered a possible motive of the attack.  (FREEMAN)
