Abante Minglanilla remains unbeaten in Gullas Cup caging
CEBU, Philippines — JC Rex Sanguenza fired 21 points as Abante Minglanilla clobbered the defending champion San Fernando Buffalos, 72-56, to stay undefeated in the Rhea Gullas Cup 2024 First District of Cebu Inter-City/Municipality Sports Festival on Sunday, February 18, at the Minglanilla Sports Complex.
Sanguenza, who shot 7-of-12 from the field and made all his six free throws, added seven rebounds, two assists, and a spectacular seven steals for Minglanilla, which firmed up its grip of the solo lead with an immaculate 3-0 slate.
Christian Andrew Amaba scored eight points and pulled down 11 boards with one assist and four steals for Minglanilla, which netted the game’s first six points and never looked back after cruising to an imposing 39-21 bulge at halftime.
Alfonso Aurio, Jr. posted 22 points, six rebounds, and two assists but his efforts went for naught as San Fernando crashed for the second time in three starts.
In other games, Talisay Aksyon Agad and Naga Atong Garbo blasted separate foes to improve their records to 2-1.
John Mark Lasola bulldozed his way to 24 points, three rebounds, two assists, and four steals to power Talisay to an 87-76 whacking of Sidlak Carcar.
Lasola drew huge support from Zeyth Nichol Alvarez and Kelaiah Josham Tapic with 10 markers apiece for Talisay, which completely dominated the match after racing to a hot 20-8 start.
On the other hand, John Carlo Bastismo and Rex Marcian Albiso connived for 25 points as Naga sank the hapless Blissful Sibonga to its third consecutive defeat via a lopsided 81-64 decision.— (FREEMAN)
