CEBU, Philippines - Out-of-town players from Negros Island stunned a strong field of Cebu's homegrown talents in the 2016 Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) Kiddies Chess Festival last Sunday at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

The Sinining siblings Aeron Keife and Kirl Charm from Escalante City, the hometown of PBA star James Yap who is now with Rain or Shine Elasto Painters after a storied career with STAR Hotshots (formerly Purefoods), swept the titles in the 15-under age group following the 7-round Swiss system format.

Aeron Keife actually finished with 6.0 points in a tie with Patrick Morala but took the top honors in the boys division courtesy of a higher tiebreaker. Dwayne Borgonia was at solo third with 5.5 points followed by Jeremy Pepito and Edel Vosotros with 5.0 points each.

Aeron's sister Kirl Charm lorded over the girls class with 4.5 points. Jeremy Rose Bajo and Adelyn Bensi  placed second and third with 4.0 and 3.5 points, respectively, whiel Marphine Faith Mangubat and Alleya Salinas were at joint fourth and fifth with 3.0 points.

The multi-titled Jerish John Velarde of Marie Ernestine Schoool based in Lapu-Lapu City and Edelyn Vosotros of Mabolo Elementary School became Cebu's saving grace after topping the 10-under battle.

Velarde snared the boys crown via seven-game sweep. Dwayne Vin Abella was at solo second with 6.0 points, while Dwayne Panaganas, Art Solomon Villaran and Justin Luis Vosotros completed the top five with 5.0 poitns apiece.

Edelyn Vosotros clinched the girls title with a perfect 5.0 points. Charliz Cuambot finished second with 4.5 points and Nicole Mae Mangubat third with 3.5 points. Anne Paradela  and Eva Joy Talidro rounded up the top five with 3.0 points.

CEPCA sports committee chairman Jun Olis said a total of 87 players aged 15 years old below took part in the one-day tilt. Club officers led by their dynamic president Engr. Jerry Maratas were on hand to award the prizes to the top performers wherein the champions received beautiful trophies, chess clocks and plastic chess sets. EBV (FREEMAN)
