Fiel tops B.C. Hortelano open chess tourney

CEBU, Philippines - Yves Fiel went home P3,000 richer after topping the B.C. Hortelano Open Chess Tournament over the weekend at the Deep Blue Chess Club located at the second level of SM City-Cebu.

Fiel completed the 7-round Swiss system competition with 6.0 points.

Edsel Montoya and Ronald Ganzon both ended their campaigns with 5.5 points, but Montoya took the second place honors courtesy of a higher tie-break output applying the Bucholz system. Montoya received P2,000, while Ganzon got P1,000.

Venancio Loyoya and Joel Pacuribot, who both finished with 5.0 points, pockected P800 and P600 for placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Joey Ardiente is at solo sixth place with 4.5 points, while Rommel Ganzon, FIDE Arbiter Felix Poloyapoy, Jr., NM Leonardo Alidani, and former non-smoker champion Carlos Moreno III rounded up the top 10 finishers.

The two-day tilt was bankrolled by Benjamin C. Hortelano, a Certified Public Accountant who is keen on promoting this famous European boardgame in Cebu. The games were supervised by FIDE Arbiter Marvin Y. Ruelan. (FREEMAN)
