“Disturbing and inappropriate”

CEBU, Philippines — Interior Secretary Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr. described as “quite disturbing and inappropriate" the remarks made by Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte and other local officials during the prayer rally in Cebu last Sunday.

"Some of the remarks made by local officials at the Hakbang ng Maisug Prayer Rally last night (Sunday) were quite disturbing and inappropriate. As public officers, we should always make sure that we conduct ourselves in accordance with the dignity of our office," Abalos said on Monday evening.

Abalos added that elected officials should set an example to their constituents as they represent their community, most especially the youth who are watching.

"We should avoid using vulgar and abusive language. We can always communicate our opinions with civility. We must always keep in mind that the Code of Ethics of Public Officials requires that we carry ourselves with integrity, professionalism, and respect to all colleagues, and to all people at that," Abalos added.

Mayor Duterte has described the campaign promise of President Marcos to bring down the retail price of rice to P20 per kilo as the "greatest scam."

"In sum, let's promote professionalism, good conduct and respect to the institutions that embody the aspirations and values of the Filipino people," he added.

Also present during the prayer rally were Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and Councilor Donaldo “Dondon” Hontiveros. Rama, in his speech, called for the government officials to unite. — (FREEMAN)
