City slaps 300 smokers with P2,000 fine

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Close to 300 individuals were already issued citation tickets this month by the Cebu City's Environment and Sanitation Enforcement Team (CESET) – all because they smoked in public places.

Last year, the said office managed to apprehend a total of 4,926 for the same offense.

A penalty of P2,000 had been imposed by the city government for the offenders.

The Cebu City Government, through CESET, hopes to instill discipline among the locals with its non-stop operations against those smoking in public spots, littering, and throwing their garbage just anywhere.

Among the public spots where these violators had been caught include bus stations, government offices, schools, medical facilities, clinics, gas stations, among others.

CESET Head Grace Luardo stressed that trying to stop smoking cigarettes is actually good for one’s health.

"Makalikay ta sa mga sakit nga sama sa cancer. Diili lang cancer sa bulsa hasta pa sa atong panglawas,"Luardo told The FREEMAN.

Luardo also reminded that passive smoking or those that inhale the smoke from cigarettes is way more harmful that smokers themselves. —Sanden Anadia
