City-wide cleanup yields over 13T tons of garbage

CEBU, Philippines — A total of 13,615 metric tons of garbage were hauled from Cebu City waterways during Saturday’s cleanup drive.

Reymar Hijara, subcommittee chairperson for operations at Cebu City Coastal Management Task Force (CMTF), said at least 2,700 volunteers, City Hall employees, barangay workers, and personnel from private firms and civic organizations joined the simultaneous three-hour cleanup in 20 coastal and riverside areas.

Some scuba divers also joined the cleanup. They collected garbage in a portion of the Mactan Channel near the South Road Properties (SRP).

Other areas included Tejero Bridge, Guadalupe River, Mahiga Creek, Pasil coast, Bulacao River, SRP coast, and waterways in Sawang Calero and in downtown areas.

He said 70 percent or 9,530.5 metric tons of the collected garbage were plastic bottles and bags.

Bulk of the garbage was collected from the Mahiga Creek and SRP.

With the theme “Clean Cities, Healthy Citizens”, the activity is in compliance with city ordinance entitled, “An Ordinance Institutionalizing the Cleanups of Rivers, Natural Waterways and Coastal Areas within the Jurisdiction of the City of Cebu”.

The city government conducts cleanup drive quarterly. — KQD (FREEMAN)
