We Are All Just Passing in Life

LIFE'S ESSENCE - Katherine R. Oyson - The Freeman

Whatever situation I would be confronted with, be it favorable or challenging, I always tell myself, “This too shall pass.” I’ve seen that nothing is permanent in this life and nothing lasts forever. The wheels of life keep on turning, no matter what.

Brian Thompson of transcendent.com cites, “One of the most important life lessons a person can learn is, ‘This too shall pass’. It’s a simple realization that everything is in constant change of transition. The way things appear this moment shall change in the next…and so on. Every person, every thought, every predicament, every upset emotion, every happy feeling – all of these will pass.

The reminder “This too shall pass” can help us to detach ourselves from events that overwhelm us or problems that would sabotage our wellbeing.  It can also teach us to be detached from persons to whom we may cling too much.

Thompson gives this advice: “When you find yourself in an unpleasant state of mind, simply remind yourself… “This too shall pass.”

Any emotional pain that we experience in life is because we resist this ever-changing nature of things. We become attached to the way things are, and then we expect them to stay the same forever. But this goes against the natural law. So then when things do eventually change, despite all of our best attempts to prevent it, we suffer.

When we’re mindful of the impermanent nature of things it thrusts us headfirst into the present moment. It makes us appreciate what we have, right here, right now. It erases our expectations from the future. It wipes away any assumptions we have for how things might someday be. We realize that that this moment, whether pleasant or otherwise, shall pass too.

Beautiful things will happen, enjoy them, but they too shall pass, and that’s okay, because that is the nature of everything. In fact, understanding this allows us to enjoy things even more because we know they are temporary. Awful things will happen as well; endure them, because they too shall pass.

Your thoughts are only thoughts, they too shall pass. Your troubling emotions, they too shall pass. Your current situation shall pass as well.

This is a happy thought to ponder, not a sad one, because without this constant state of transition, nothing could ever become anything. Without death, there can be no life. Without transition from day to night, you could see no stars. Things must change. Nothing lasts forever. Everything… this too shall pass.
