Filipino bets made an early exit in the boys’ singles of the 12th Mitsubishi Lancer International Junior Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.
Wild cards Joseph Victorino, Johan Guba, John Rey Moreno and Ian de Guzman put up a gallant stand but were simply outclassed by their foreign rivals.
Victorino, fresh in the ITF Junior Circuit held in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, bowed to world’s No. 70 and fourth seed Sanil Kumar Sipaeya of India, 4-6, 2-6.
Guba succumbed to second seed American Prakash Amritraj, 1-6, 0-6; Moreno lost to Jan Stancik of Slovak Republic, 3-6, 0-6 and De Guzman fell to Luka Gregore of Slovenia Republic, 0-6, 0-6.
Seeded players Christian Johansson of Sweden, Jacob Olsen of New Zealand and Chris Kwon of the United States also ended their campaign in the 21-nation tournament sponsored by Adidas, Universal Robina Corp., Gatorade, Viva Mineral Water, Manila Midtown Hotel, Wilson balls and the Philippine Sports Commission.
