Catantan target ang gold sa Paris

MANILA, Philippines — Hanggang ngayon ay may suot pa ring knee brace si national fencer Sam Catantan dalawang buwan bago sumabak sa 2024 Olympic Games sa Paris, France.

“Up to now naka knee brace pa ako for safety,” wika ni Catantan sa kanyang pagbisita sa Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum kahapon sa conference room ng Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Nagkaroon ang 22-anyos na si Catantan ng isang left ACL injury sa kanyang paglahok sa women’s foil event sa nakaraang Southeast Asian Games sa Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

“I was out the whole year because of the injury and started fencing by the end of February, eight months without fencing, all rehab, physical training and strength and condi­tioning,” sabi ng star fencer ng Pennsylvania State University sa US NCAA sa Forum na presinta ng San Miguel Corporation, PSC, POC, Milo, Smart/PLDT at ArenaPlus.

Hangad ni Catantan na maduplika ang pagbuhat ni national weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz sa kauna-unahang Olympic gold medal ng Pilipinas.

Bukod kay Catantan, ang iba pang tatarget ng Olympic gold sa Paris ay sina Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Nesthy Petecio, bronze medal winner Eumir Felix Marcial at Aira Villegas ng boxing, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnasts Caloy Yulo, Aleah Finnegan at Levi Ruivivar, rower Joanie Delgaco at weightlifters Vanessa Sarno, Elreen Ando at John Ceniza.
