MANILA, Philippines - Nahalal si REP. Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino bilang secretary general ng World Chess Federation (FIDE) sa eleksiyong naganap noong Lunes sa Tromso, Norway na siyang host ng 41st Chess Olympiad.
Ang Mayor ng Tagaytay City mula 2004 hanggang 2013 bago nailuklok sa Kongreso bilang kinatawan ng ikapitong distrito ng Cavite na si Tolentino ay kabilang sa ticket ni incumbent FIDE president Kirzan Ilyumzhinov na tu-malo kay dating world champion Garry Kasparov, 110- 61 sa secret balloting.
Tinalo ni Tolentino, president ng Asian Zone 3.3 at secretary general ng National Chess Federation of the Philippines si incumbent FIDE secretary general Ignatius Leong ng Singapore.
Si Tolentino ay presidente rin ng PhilCycling na naging host ng ilang cycling events sa Tagaytay.
Bukod kay Tolentino, ang iba pang miyembro ng Team Ilyumzhinov na na-elect ay sina Georgios Makropoulos, na nanatiling deputy president, Aguinaldo Jaime (vice president), Martha Fierro Baquero (vice president) at Adrial Siegel (treasurer).
Ayon kay Tolentino, bibitawan niya ang Asian Zone 3.3 presidency at ibibigay sa Vietnam Chess Federation kapag nagsimula na ang kanyang panunungkulan bilang Fide Secretary General.
Isa sa natalo sa Team Ilyumzhinov ay si NCFP chairman/president Prospero ‘Butch’ Pichay na bigo kay Sheik Sultan Bin Khalifa Al-Nehyan sa Asian Chess Federation presidency.
