32nd National Crime Prevention Week starts
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) opened the 32nd National Crime Prevention Week with a ceremony at the CCPO Parade Ground in Cebu City yesterday, September 1.
Police personnel, government representatives, partner agencies, and community stakeholders attended the activity, which focused on strengthening public participation in crime prevention.
The celebration carried the theme, “Strengthening Civilian Oversight and Collective Action for Safer Communities.”
CCPO Acting City Director Police Col. Ricky Sumalde welcomed the participants and thanked the agencies and other stakeholders who continue to support the city’s peace and order efforts.
In his message, Sumalde said keeping communities safe requires the cooperation and active participation of the public, not only the police.
National Police Commission Region-7 city officer for Cebu City North Atty. Ronald A. Luib Jr. discussed the purpose of the observance and the role of civilians in strengthening accountability and oversight in law enforcement.
“Very important g’yud ang community participation in crime prevention,” Luib said in an interview.
He said preventing crime is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation among government offices, law enforcement agencies, and communities.
One of the activities during the celebration was the “Pagtataya ng Mamamayan sa Paghahadlang sa Krimen o Pito Laban sa Krimen,” which was participated in by interns from the University of Cebu-Banilad.
The activity encouraged young people and other members of the community to become more aware of their role in preventing crime.
The ceremony ended with closing remarks from Police Maj. Marvin Fegarido, acting chief of the Community Affairs and Development Unit, who reaffirmed the CCPO’s commitment to working with communities and other stakeholders in crime prevention.
The National Crime Prevention Week is observed annually from September 1 to 7 to promote awareness and encourage public participation in crime prevention efforts. — (FREEMAN)
