Be a franchisee, earn

IN MY BASKET - Lydia Castillo -
If there’s a little money saved somewhere, it might be good to get into business and earn that much-needed extra peso. We have seen how some chains have grown from small enterprises to big, successful ones. The secret is to choose carefully the type of business, where to locate it and study its possible market. Food seems to be the best choice (people need to eat at all times) and franchising is now booming. At the recently-held Bakers’ World 2005 at the World Trade Center, we noted some very good possibilities not only in bakery products but others as well. We also met some very enterprising young men and women with the drive to succeed.

It could take from a few thousand pesos to millions to get started, depending on one’s capacity. The more popular chains include Dunkin Donuts, Julie’s and Max’s. The latter has recently introduced The Bake Shop which offers a collection that includes empanada, ensaymada, croissants, cakes and cookies.

The distributors of Lurpak butter (supposed to be the best tasting in the world) had a novel idea of promoting their product. They coordinated with De La Salle’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management to have a group of future chefs (Stephen, Ino, Jules, Bam and Bon), all very enthusiastic and driven towards a satisfying career, to demonstrate how to make cookies called Tish (after the college dean) and Pancakes with Mushroom filling. They have the guidance of the school’s Shirley Joseph. Recipes can be provided to interested readers.

We had a few good minutes with another inspired young lady called Kim behind the booth of a new ice cream brand, Creamline, based in Clark, Pampanga. To date they are only offering drumsticks in different flavors. Considering their suggested retail price of P10 to P12, we reckon this could give the more popular brands some competition. A small freezer costs P12,000 while the big one is P20,000. They welcome dealers and retailers; call tel. 732-3315. Then there’s Jacqhi’s (for Jacques and Harry Inc.), which distributes Nestle Softserve units which dispense sundaes (flavor at the moment is only vanilla). This can be put up in schools, malls, etc. Initial deposit of P30,000 is required. Call 531-3914.

Consumers like us often find a few good things in trade fairs such as this one. The engaging Rolly Navallo, behind the Bravo’s booth, was busy giving tips to ladies about their dips, sauces and spreads. One can get two or three bottles of different flavors (garlic cheese, salmon mousse or tomato garlic, from P115, are new) dab them all together on a piece of bread (crostini, pizza chips or foccacia, from P30) and voila! The multi-flavored piece takes on a new dimension. This company is geared towards healthy eating. Bravo’s restaurants and delis are spread throughout the city.

From the company that calls itself On the Go Ventures, there is Garlic Batute, in two sizes (P70 and P130). They have won awards for their products including a variety of sausages, bangus relleno and embutido. They are based in Angeles City with outlets in Harrison Plaza and Robinson’s Place. They offer a 20% discount on wholesale prices and deliver bulk orders, but will only entertain non-mall and non-supermarket sellers. Tel. (045) 322-6658. Before leaving the hall, we got attracted to the smoked pigeon and smoked duck on the display table of Shuin Food Products, a company located on Araneta Avenue, Quezon City, tel. 749-2954. A whole duck costs P650, but you can get a fourth at P165. The chicken is tagged at P210 while the pigeon goes for P220 each. They also manufacture kikiam and Chinese sausage.

Should there be need for packaging, look up the RM-GRP Printing company in Sta. Mesa, tel. 713-8547. They carry cake boards, boxes in different sizes and shapes, even customized containers. They entertain minimum orders of as few as ten pieces.

The Fair was organized by Premiere Events Plus Group, Inc. which has also calendared the following: "Taste of Manila ’05" aimed at merging food and lifestyle, 17 — 19 June, 2005 at the SM Megatrade Hall and the "Wofex (World’s Food Expo) 2005" from 3 to 6 August, at the World Trade Center. See you at the fair!
