Solutions vs smog

The Philippine Star

As the Philippines embarks on long-term development of so-called green or clean sources of energy as solar, hydroelectric, wind and geothermal, the country has to continue its reliance on “less clean” traditional fuels as gasoline, diesel, bunker oil and natural gas in the foreseeable future for various industrial requirements.

Given this fact, the environment advocacy group AWAKE (Awareness of the Keepers of the Environment) through its founder and president, Edgar C. Lopez has called on concerned authorities to consider available options and possible solutions that would not only reduce carbon emission that pollutes the air and contributes to global warming and climate change but also boost energy efficiency in the use of fossil fuels.

One option and solution that authorities should look into is the practicability and viability of wider industrial use of an ester-based fuel additive that has been developed in the USA -in the late 80s which extensive tests and current partial utilization here and abroad have shown drastic reduction in smoke emission while enhancing fuel use efficiency by up to 30 percent.

Awake came to know about this fuel additive known as Omstar Dx-1 from members living and working in abroad who have used the product and proven its effectiveness in reducing smoke emission and improving fuel efficiency as used for their cars or service vehicles or in their work.

Upon further research, AWAKE has found out that Omstar DX-1 was invented and first introduced as D-1280X by Dr. Morton Fainman, a synthetic ester chemist for fuel during World War 2 who later became director for research for Standard Oil of Ohio who teamed up with environmentalist/industrialist Richard Skagg in 1986 to form what is now known as the Omstar Environmental Products Inc.

In producing the wonder fuel additive, Dr. Fainman successfully worked on his theory that fuels can be improved through the addition of an ester that could give fuels selflubricating and self-cleaning properties resulting to better fuel combustion and efficiency. Dr. George Paskalov, a well known scientist and professor from UCLA took over as chief scientist when Dr. Fainman passed away.

It was also learned that the said fuel additive has been extensively tested since it got its US Patent in 1990 and used in various types and sizes of motor vehicles, generators, open furnaces, boliers, even ship engines. It has logged more than ten years and ten million miles of tests, the biggest of which covered four million miles involving 30 Los Angeles Airport shuttle buses which reportedly resulted in smoke and hydrocarbon emission reduction of 87 percent.

The fuel additive product is currently used by the US Marine Corps, the Los Angeles Airport Bus Authority and by many others in and outside the USA including some companies in the Philippines like the Sumifru Philippines, the third largest fruit distributor in the world, Coca Cola FEMSA Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard who all should be commended for helping clean the air of pollutants.

Authorities should look into this option and possible solution to help reduce air pollution while promoting better fuel efficiency for our growing number of motored vehicles especially those for public transportation. – Awareness of the Keepers of the Environment advocacy group
