University of Batangas to offer Smart IT elective

MANILA, Philippines - By offering Application Developers’ Intro School (ADIS) next school year, University of Batangas (UB) expects to help IT students become more employable. Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) designed ADIS as an integrative course to train students for IT projects in the real world, particularly in the telecommunications industry.

ADIS was customized into a 16-week IT elective for Smart partner schools. Currently, a total of 16 colleges and universities have already included ADIS in their curriculum.

Ronald Ramos, IT specialist in Smart’s human resources department, said, “When IT graduates are hired, they’re asked to integrate everything they learned in school.” ADIS enables students to integrate the skills and knowledge they picked up from different IT subjects even before they join the workforce. The course is expected to expand the students’ skills in Systems Building, Programming and Development, Testing and Quality Assurance, and Technical Documentation.

Ramos says partner schools like UB will be provided with the materials necessary in implementing the course. Smart also holds a two-week training session for faculty who will teach ADIS and an immersion program to further enhance their real-life project experience.

UB president Dr. Hernando Perez is honored that Smart, the country’s no. 1 mobile services provider, chose their school to be a partner.

He stresses: “We cannot sit and wait for things to happen. We want to do things others have not done.” UB will be the first in its region to offer ADIS as an elective.

Last June, UB was cited by the Professional Regulations Commission for its outstanding performance in the May 2008 Licensure Examination for Electrical Engineers.
