All-embracing society

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

In reality, parenting is a daunting task that should be acknowledged and taken up with full sensitivity. A lot more because of a unique condition, there is an extra challenge in dealing with a special child.

For their children, parents want the best. And no matter what they do, they do all that makes the lives of their children meaningful in order to make them independent and productive, and helpful to others as well.

This is the case of a mother who spent some time in a resort and whose special child, while in the area, showed so much joy. But because of the policies of minimizing the noise level of the said establishment, the experience turned out otherwise.

The said parent was accused of failing to enforce parental control and understanding fully the disability. For others, it is simple to claim so as that they lack information about such disability and so quick to judge.

Understanding some basic points about children with autism is very essential. This includes knowing that autistic children often find it hard to recognize and manage their emotions. Learning to recognize and manage emotions can help them understand and respond to other people. And we need to use everyday interactions to work on emotions skills like emotional labels and shared attention.

On the other hand, doing an overview of some institutions that actually provide services to individuals' specific needs, especially for children with special needs. This involves providing meals, accommodations and many activities for a single price, all-inclusive resorts, for example, have long been a great choice for family vacations. A variety of all-inclusive resorts have become much more inclusive for families, providing guests with disabilities with better accommodation, support, and services. And so for parents for their part to be also extra careful in considering establishments that have a good track record of providing safe and humane services.

But in reality there are establishments or places that impose policies and regulations that do not, in a way, consider the unique needs of other segments or sectors of the society, and in a way very restrictive, and to the extent, very discriminatory. And in this case these establishments don’t want to compromise the needs and pleasure of the majority.

But our intention is really to be inclusive, as a group of different needs and wants. Inclusion, commonly practiced in education, captures an all-embracing social philosophy in one phrase. With respect to people with disabilities and special education, inclusion provides opportunities for students with disabilities to learn in general education classes alongside their non-disabled peers. But this, hopefully, will extend outside the educational realm. We need to have a world that understands the various needs and wants and exert efforts and ways for a truly inclusive society.
