CANDID - CANDID By Ardelle Merton -
One can''t miss all the campaign material lining our vision - the mix of faces, names and colors strategically catch our eye everywhere we turn. The posters have become like city wallpaper. The campaigning reminds us how important our votes are. Political news and tsismis abound on the media and dominate coffee shop conversations. Yes, political leaders matter. They can either make or break the government. For this coming election, I think that when it comes to choosing candidates, it becomes a choice between the "tried and tested" or "someone new". All candidates promise change, but I''d prefer someone who explains how he or she plans to make it. Choose the candidate with a good track record (even personal history has a way of repeating itself) and the one who doesn''t try to buy your vote. Choose the candidates who have shown honesty, integrity and dedication throughout their careers and those who are firm and smart enough to stick to their plans and principles. Choose the ones who obviously have a passionate love for our country (and locally, for Cebu) because one with nationalism - love for one''s country - refuses to disappoint.

Last Wednesday, political allies and adversaries alike were shocked by the fatal shooting of Rogelio Ilustrisimo Sr., a Sta. Fe town mayoralty candidate. The gunman got away. The late Ilustrisimo was a three-term mayor and was the standard bearer of the administration Lakas-Christian Democrats. It was reported to be the first murder of a candidate in a Cebu election in decades. Is this how heated our politics have become in our present times? That murder has to be resorted to? I shudder to think what else could happen in the coming days. I hope the Comelec office beefs up security now that the elections are fast approaching. May the police conduct a thorough and speedy investigation on this outrageous murder.
