MANILA, Philippines — Five fake news purveyors inciting violence on social media following the Senate shooting will face cybercrime charges, the Philippine National Police said yesterday.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group to initiate a probe and identify the digital threat actors behind the social media accounts.

“We view these online threats and attempts to incite violence with utmost seriousness. We will hold accountable those behind these irresponsible posts and contents,” Nartatez said.

Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda earlier disclosed that five persons of interest have been identified.

Nartatez urged the public not to spread misinformation to create fear and breach public order.

People are free to criticize the government, but promoting violence on social media has serious consequences, Nartatez said.
