Shear line improves Angat Dam’s elevation

MANILA, Philippines — The water level in Angat Dam in Bulacan has improved by almost one meter following rainfall spawned by the shear line.

As of 8 a.m. yesterday, the dam’s elevation was at 201.33 meters, higher by 73 centimeters than its previous level of 200.6 meters.

Despite the improvement, the elevation is still 10.67 meters short of Angat’s normal high water level of 212 meters.

Patrick Dizon, department manager at the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, said the 212-meter yearend target for Angat is still achievable even as successive typhoons failed to replenish the reservoir.

Angat Dam supplies more than 90 percent of Metro Manila’s potable water needs and provides for the irrigation needs of 25,000 hectares of farmlands in Bulacan and Pampanga.

Meanwhile, three Luzon dams – Ambuklao and Binga in Benguet, and Magat in Isabela – continued to release water as the reservoirs are nearing high normal water level.

La Mesa Dam in Quezon City reached 79.61 meters, or only 54 centimeters below its spilling level of 80.15 meters, according to the MWSS.

San Roque Dam in Pangasinan reached 280.51 meters or 51 centimeters above its normal high water level of 280 meters.

Caliraya Dam in Laguna remained at 287.91 meters.
