2 NPA rebels slain in Sultan Kudarat clash

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in an encounter with soldiers in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat on Thursday.

The military said the rebels fired at members of the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion (IB) dispatched to verify the reported presence of armed men in a secluded area in Barangay Salansang.

The fatalities, identified as Alexander Blewas and Samson Sedaw, had pending arrest warrants issued by various courts in South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat for arson, multiple murder and cattle theft.

An M16 rifle, a .45-caliber pistol and bomb materials were reportedly recovered from the slain rebels.

Lt. Col. Guillermo Mabute Jr. of the 57th IB and Brig. Gen. Michael Santos, 603rd Infantry Brigade commander, thanked local officials in Lebak and community leaders in Barangay Salansang for immediately reporting the presence of NPA rebels in the area.
