MANILA, Philippines — Police recovered yesterday 19 motor vehicles in Quezon City amid the crackdown on carjackers who use the “rent-tangay” scheme to rent vehicles and steal them.

The recovered vehicles – 12 of which are motor vehicles and seven motorcycles – were impounded at the anti-car theft unit of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD).

Three carjacking rings have been identified and neutralized by authorities following reports from business owners renting out vehicles, QCPD director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said at a press briefing at Camp Karingal.

Another crime group stealing parked vehicles was also dismantled, Maranan said.

The operations resulted in the arrest of five suspects, he said.

Business owners should verify the authenticity of the car documents submitted by clients as suspects provide fake papers during rental process, Maranan said.

Tracking devices should also be installed to recover vehicles in case of theft, Maranan said, adding that some criminals tamper with these equipment to evade detection.

Owners of recovered vehicles should go to Camp Karingal with pertinent documents for verification and release of their cars and motorcycles, according to Maranan.
