Muslim cleric killed in Basilan gun attack

ISABELA, Basilan, Philippines — Unidentified men fired at a group of villagers outside a mosque following the nightly Ramadan prayers in Sumisip town on Friday, leaving a Muslim religious leader dead and four others wounded.

Mutilan Ajanab, 20, died while being treated in a hospital.

Rashid Suraman, 48; Abdulmalik Jumatal, 34; Harisa Hadjail, 15; and Hafidz Jumlatal, 23, were wounded.

Police said the gun attack occurred in Barangay Sapa Bulak at about 7:45 p.m.

Basilan Gov. Jim Salliman, chairman of the provincial peace and order council, condemned the atrocity and called on the police to identify the perpetrators.   – John Unson
