MANILA, Philippines — Firecrackers remain banned in Muntinlupa, the city government reminded residents yesterday as it targets a zero firecracker casualty count for the holidays.

In a statement, the city government said that firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, as well as open pipe mufflers, are prohibited in the city.

Mayor Jaime Fresnedi said he has ordered the local peace and order council to tighten their monitoring of the use of prohibited firecrackers and put up checkpoints along roads and in marketplaces to apprehend violators.

The city has recorded no firecracker-related casualties since 2018.

Commercial establishments selling firecrackers face having their permit and license to operate revoked.

Fresnedi urged residents to use alternative noise-making instruments instead.
