‘Significant’ spike in CDO, Davao, Iloilo COVID-19 cases

MANILA, Philippines — A significant increase in COVID-19 cases has been recorded in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Iloilo in the past week, according to the OCTA Research Group.

Citing data from the Department of Health (DOH), the group of experts said Cagayan de Oro logged an average of 94 cases per day from May 12 to 18, an increase of 52 percent compared to the past week.

Davao City recorded an average of 61 new cases per day, an increase of 36 percent, while Iloilo had an average of 58 new cases per day or an increase of 99 percent.

Cagayan de Oro ranked second among local government units (LGUs) with the highest number of average daily new cases.

Zamboanga City is first with 158 cases, an increase of four percent.

Bacolod City, which ranked third, recorded a four percent increase from the preceding week with 62.

The number of new cases dropped in the other LGUs which previously logged a spike in infections.

Baguio City recorded 60 cases per day, down 23 percent; Antipolo in Rizal, 59 (down 13 percent), Bacoor in Cavite, 55 (down 16 percent), Dasmariñas in Cavite, 50 (down 10 percent) and Calamba in Laguna, 47 (down 36 percent).

OCTA said Tuguegarao recorded a 34-percent drop in the average number of new cases per day, but logged a ”very high” average daily attack rate of 28.22 infections per 100,000 population.

Many LGUs in the National Capital Region Plus areas recorded a drop in new cases, it said.

The DOH had earlier said COVID-19 cases in 10 regions are rising even as Metro Manila and neighboring provinces are seeing a ”marked decline.”

The uptrend in cases was recorded in Bicol, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga peninsula, Caraga, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Cagayan Valley and Calabarzon.
