ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — An Abu Sayyaf bandit was killed in an encounter with government troopers in Indanan, Sulu on Monday.

Soldiers of the 41st Infantry Battalion clashed with around 20 bandits in Barangay Tumatangis at around 7:36 a.m., according to Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., Joint Task Force Sulu and 11th Division commander.

Vinluan said a soldier was wounded in pursuit operations.

Maj. Arvin John Encinas, spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said an M16 rifle with an M203 grenade launcher was recovered from the fatality.

“Terror groups are taking advantage of the situation as some of our troops are deployed to assist local government units in the battle against COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019),” Westmincom chief Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said.
