UP suspends fratmen for hazing

Photos of a UP law student with bruises from alleged hazing rites and a paddle reportedly used for the rite surfaced on Twitter on Thursday.

MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City has suspended members of a fraternity allegedly involved in hazing rites that surfaced on social media.

In a statement issued yesterday, UP-Diliman’s Office of the Chancellor said “following leads from social media posts,” it is investigating allegations of hazing against members of the Sigma Rho fraternity.

“We have placed suspects on preventive suspension and will file formal charges where there is evidence to support such a move,” the statement read.

Screenshots of group chats among members of the fraternity regarding hazing surfaced on the social media platform Twitter.

The UP office of the Chancellor urged its students, faculty and staff to report violations of the Code of Student Conduct to “put an end to the culture of violence and impunity” in the campus.
