Northern Mindanao jeepney drivers seek P5 fare hike

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines — Citing the rising cost of basic commodities, jeepney drivers and operators in Northern Mindanao have asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to grant an increase of P5 in the minimum fare.

Epifanio Tamiok Jr., Transporter Federation Empowerment Council Inc. chairman, said it is high time for another fare hike after 10 years.

The current minimum fare in the region is P7.50.

“If it cannot be granted, our minimum fare should be the same as Manila, which is P9,” Joel Gabatan, National Confederation of Transport Union regional chairman, said.

Aminoden Guro, LTFRB-Northern Mindanao director, said it is up to the members of the full LTFRB commission to review the petitions of various transport groups.

Guro warned jeepney drivers and operators not to increase fares pending a decision of the LTFRB.
