MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) yesterday signed an order officially granting the P9 minimum fare for jeepneys.

The P9 fare for the first four kilometers of the ride is the highest recorded minimum fare granted by the LTFRB.

The order was signed by LTFRB chairperson Martin Delgra and member Ronaldo Corpuz.

The LTFRB announced on Wednesday night that it granted the P1 provisional fare hike, sowing confusion among commuters and jeepney drivers alike.

Some commuters complained that some drivers began charging P9 on Thursday even without the official order of the LTFRB.

Following the issuance of the order yesterday, the P9 minimum fare was made effective immediately by the board.

The suceeding per kilometer charge of P1.50 stays.

Students, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens are entitled to a 20 percent discount on fares everyday upon presentation of their identification cards.

The LTFRB cited rising fuel prices and higher operational costs of public utility jeepney operators in granting the provisional increase.

The petitioners, composed of five major transport groups, wanted a provisionary increase of P2 but only P1 was granted by the board.
