5 soldiers wounded in BIFF grenade attack in Maguindanao

MAGUINDANAO, Philippines — Five soldiers were hurt in a grenade blast that ripped through a roadside Army detachment in Shariff Aguak town late Thursday.
The wounded soldiers belong to the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion, a unit of the 6th Infantry Division.
Responding police investigators said two men on motorcycle perpetrated the grenade attack.
One of the two suspects hurled the grenade over the fence of the detachment along a stretch of a highway in Barangay Labo-Labo in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao and both hurriedly escaped as the explosive went off.
The injured soldiers — Sgt. Allan Labuyo, Cpl. Ebrahim Meto and Privates 1st Class Arnel Aspacio, Fernando Tangara, and John Mark Arroyo — sustained shrapnel wounds in different parts of their bodies.
Major Gen. Arnel Dela Vega, commander of 6th ID, said they are certain the bombing was pulled off by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters to avenge the deaths of two members, siblings Norolam and Saiden Kasan, who were killed in an Army operationThursday.
The two fatalities, both sons of BIFF Commander Kulaw Kasan, were killed in the Army’s bombardment with 105 Howitzer Cannon of a BIFF lair in Sharif Saidona town in Maguindanao at past 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
The artillery attack was launched after villages in the municipality reported to the police and military the suspicious convergence in Barangay Pagatin 1 there of some 20 BIFF gunmen.
