Soldier killed in ambush

MANILA, Philippines -  A soldier was killed in an ambush in  Zamboanga del Norte yesterday.

TSgt. Zaldy Caling-Caling, 42, of the 13th Special Forces Co. was driving his motorcycle with militiaman Dandan Lacsayao when they were waylaid in Barangay St. Mary in Sirawai town at around 7 a.m.

Caling-Caling died at the scene. Lacsayao managed to jump from the motorcycle and suffered minor injuries.

In Maguindanao, Idris Sangki, 45, president of the Association of Barangay Captains in Datu Abdullah Sangki, was driving an Isuzu trooper with his 13-year-old son on their way to the town center when motorcycle-riding men fired at them. Sangki remained confined in a hospital. His son was unhurt.

Police are still investigating the incidents.
