Mindanao execs probed for illegal dumps
MANILA, Philippines - Several Mindanao local officials are under investigation for operating illegal dumps.
Local officials in the cities of Kidapawan in Cotabato, Koronadal (South Cotabato), Valencia (Bukidnon) and Cagayan de Oro (Misamis Oriental) and the towns of General Luna (Surigao del Norte), Marihatag (Surigao del Sur) and Loreto (Agusan del Sur) attended hearings conducted by the Office of the Environmental Ombudsman in Davao City last week.
The fact-finding inquiry is in line with the campaign to ensure compliance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
The environmental ombudsman gave concerned officials a non-extendible period of 30 days to submit their explanation and a Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan, which must include a proposal to immediately close open dumps.
A team will monitor post-closure activities, the ombudsman added.
Twenty-nine illegal dumps across the country had beenclosed as of last month.
