NIA exec faces perjury raps

Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the filing of perjury charges against an official of the National Irrigation Administration for misdeclaring his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).

Julius Maquiling, NIA-Northern Mindanao manager, will also be indicted for violation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

Graft probers said Maquiling did not declare in his 2009 SALN that he owned JS Maquiling Marketing.

“Respondent’s defense that he did not declare this because such business is sporadic and isolated is belied by the income statement and annual income tax return he filed with the BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue),” the anti-graft court said.

The company reported gross sales of P518,684 in 2009.

“Respondent made a willful and deliberate assertion of a falsehood,” the court said.
