Plebiscite for Laguna town’s cityhood set

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will hold a plebiscite on Dec. 28 to ratify the conversion of the municipality of San Pedro, Laguna into a component city, officials said yesterday.

The poll body has approved the recommendation of Bartolome Sinocruz, Comelec deputy executive director for operations, for the conduct of the plebiscite, which costs P13.4 million.

The Comelec ordered the municipality of San Pedro to pay P6.5 million in plebiscite expenses.

The town will also have to release P6.9 million to pay for local expenses such as the per diems of the personnel of the Department of Education who will administer the plebiscite.

Since July this year, the municipality has been requesting the Comelec to hold the plebiscite, but the poll body opted to delay it until after the Oct. 28 barangay polls.

Based on the Comelec’s calendar of activities for the plebiscite, the town had been placed on plebiscite period from Nov. 28 until Jan. 2, 2014.
