UK terror suspect will be detained on Australian immigration violations

-

CANBERRA (AP) - The doctor charged in Australia in connection to the failed British terrorist plot was kept in custody Monday after the government invoked immigration laws to keep him behind bars despite a magistrate's ruling granting him bail.

Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews told reporters in Canberra, the national capital, that he had canceled the working visa of Mohamed Haneef on suspicion that he had links to criminals and said he would soon be taken into immigration custody.

Haneef, an Indian who came to Australia from Britain last year, was arrested July 2 in connection to the British plots and later charged with providing support to a terrorist group.

Earlier Monday, a magistrate granted Haneef bail, saying that authorities had not shown a clear link between him and the plot.
