Britons warned of malaria

The British government has warned its nationals here of malaria following the death of three Filipino journalists who contracted the deadly disease in the hinterlands of Palawan.

In its latest travel advisory, the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) said malaria, including malarial encephalitis, exists in parts of the country. It also noted cases of dengue fever, another mosquito-borne ailment.

It advised British nationals to seek medical advice as well as comprehensive travel and medical insurance before traveling to the Philippines.

In an earlier advisory, the FCO warned Britons of a "high threat" of terrorism in the country, urging them to stay away especially from the central, southern and western parts of Mindanao. — Pia Lee-Brago
