MMDA sets 60-kph speed limit on Commonwealth Avenue segment

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will start today enforcing a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour (kph) along Commonwealth Avenue from the Sandiganbayan complex to Doña Carmen Subdivision in North Fairview and vice versa.

According to the MMDA, traffic enforcers will be deployed to patrol the area starting at 7 a.m. to apprehend motorists who would break the speed limit.

On Jan. 29, 2011, the MMDA enforced the 60-kph speed limit along Commonwealth Avenue from Philcoa to the Sandiganbayan complex as a response to the increasing number of accidents along the 12.4-kilometer thoroughfare, dubbed Metro Manila’s “killer highway.”

Immediately following the implementation of the speed limit from Philcoa to Sandiganbayan, the MMDA reported a decrease in the number of traffic accidents.

Motorists nabbed by the MMDA for speeding along Commonwealth Avenue will be made to pay a P1,200 fine at the agency’s office in Makati City.

According to the MMDA, the speed limit benefits senior citizens and parents driving their children to school using Commonwealth Avenue, especially in the morning.

With a span of 18 lanes, Commonwealth Avenue is considered the country’s widest highway.
