NBI files reckless imprudence in homicide raps vs Tab Baldwin, others

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation has filed complaints against Ateneo basketball head coach Tab Baldwin and several members of the team's coaching staff on Monday, July 13. The cases are in connection to June 8 the drowning of student athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in Aurora.

The complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in two counts of homicide named the following:

  • Tab Baldwin, head coach
  • Ceasar Vincent Elumba, strength and conditioning coach
  • Grant Dearns, strength and conditioning coach
  • Reynaldo Jacinto Jr., assistant coach
  • Dean Caesar Castaño, assistant coach
  • Sandro Nicholas Soriano, assistant coach
  • Hernan Ameer Domingo, assistant coach
  • John Eric Rueca, physical therapist

The complaint for simple negligence resulting in two counts of homicide named the following:

  • Emmanuel Fernandez, athletic director, University Athletics Office
  • Francisco Zubia III, operating manager, Hermanos Resort
  • Frederick Zubia, co-manager, Hermanos Resort
  • Yedda Mary Rubio, co-manager, Hermanos Resort

The NBI also said it referred possible administrative liabilities to the Department of the Interior and Local Government to ensure regulatory accountability among responsible officials in the municipality of Dipaculao, Aurora.

The referral specifically covers the Business Permits and Licensing Office officer, the Municipal Tourism and Cultural Development officer and the head of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, according to the NBI.

In a separate statement, Ateneo de Manila University said it would refrain from commenting on matters related to the incident while the case is pending.

"As we have consistently stated, the University will continue to respect the ongoing process, refrain from commenting on matters now before the proper authorities to preserve the integrity of those proceedings, and fully cooperate with all lawful investigations," the university said.
