MANILA, Philippines — Technology company Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, has launched a series of webtoons that aim to educate Filipino teens on how to protect their data and safeguard their privacy online.

The three webtoons, which feature different stories tackling key topics on issues important for teens, were developed in line with the Kabataang Digital Campaign of the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and Child Rights Network.

“At Meta, we care deeply about the safety and well-being of teens and young people on our platform and we take that responsibility very seriously,” said Clare Amador, head of public policy at Meta Philippines.

According to Meta, the three webtoons were developed based on consultations with Filipino teens from diverse socio-economic backgrounds throughout the country.

They were created in line with child safeguarding standards and aim to help teens better control their experience on social media in a way that works for them and supports their well-being.

In “Get Ready With Me!,” happy-go-lucky Katie learns about the importance of online privacy and being mindful of what you share and with whom.

“The Cat in the Alley” tells the story of Sai and Naomi as they learn about boundaries and what a safe space looks like as they work to build trust with Tuna, the black rescue kitty.

Meanwhile, “From URL to IRL” is about online gaming enthusiast Josh, who learns the value of protecting his personal information with help from his friends and a firm talk with his mom.

Each webtoon is composed of three episodes that are available to view and download for free on the Digital Tayo website, where interactive educational games and quizzes are also available.

Meta said the webtoons will soon be available in Filipino, Cebuano and other languages. It will also be partnering with other organizations and government agencies for expanded distribution.

“We’re committed to  protecting teens and supporting families online. We will continue to work closely with experts, parents, guardians and teens to develop relatable and informative resources that will equip teens across the Philippines with knowledge and tools that will help them take control of their online experience and  help them become responsible users of social media,” noted Malina Enlund, Meta’s safety policy manager for Asia Pacific.

Creators and youth advocates Janina Vela and Hannah Pangilinan joined the launch at the Meta Philippines office in Taguig City on Thursday.

Meanwhile, NPC Director Maria Theresita Patula welcomed the initiative to educate teens on how to protect their privacy and stay safe online.
