‘Next CJ should be honest, competent’
MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte wants an honest and competent individual to become the next chief justice, Malacañang said yesterday.
“As the President always says, there are only two qualifications he wants from all his appointees, and that is honesty and competence,” presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a radio interview when asked about his basis in choosing the next chief justice.
Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin retired last Friday after 33 years of service in the judiciary.
Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, the most senior member of the Supreme Court, will serve as acting chief justice until he retires on Oct. 26.
The candidates for the top judicial post are Supreme Court Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta, Estela Perlas-Bernabe and Andres Reyes Jr.
