MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) expects the printing of ballots for the May 2019 midterm elections to be completed before Holy Week.

“At the current rate, ballot printing may be completed… earlier than the initial target date of April 25,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said.

Holy Week in the Philippines begins on April 15.

Jimenez noted that printing at the National Printing Office (NPO) went full blast last Feb. 20, with the printing machines cranking out an average of one million ballots per day.

As of March 19, the Comelec printing committee reported that 38,347,754 ballots have been printed or 60.24 percent of the 63,662,481 total number of ballots to be printed.

Yet to be printed are ballots for Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley and the National Capital Region.

There are 61,843,750 registered voters for the May 13 polls, but Comelec said more than 1.1 million ballots will be used for the final testing and sealing process.
